MicroVirus'The target account name is incorrect' when joining a Windows 2008 Server to the domain. I demoted the machine, removed DNS, unjoined the machine from the domain, cleaned up the metadata, deleted the machine account, forced replication on the domain controllers, and waited overnight. Now I want to start rejoining the server. Logon Failure: The target account name is incorrect which I am sure you can guess, was completely wrong as I’ve being using the domain and the account in question for years. Clearly, something was going on with the domain services.
Sep 24, 2016 Some Windows updates occurred at 3 AM and ever since then, 'Target account name is incorrect' error message comes up when attempting to access a network drive via all the computers. Can't find the network mapping component in the Group Policy Management area to map the drive out through a group policy as per here. This issue is often caused by an incorrect DNS entry for the client computer on the DNS server. Sometimes it happens after computer is assigned a static IP address and DNS server still have a record for the old IP. Try accessing computer using its IP address. 192.168.1.105 c$. If this works update computer's DNS record on your DNS server. Sep 14, 2016 Logon failure: the target account name is incorrect Please Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. The target name used was cifs/polosrv.polo.com. This indicates that the target server failed to decrypt the ticket provided by the client. This can occur when the target server principal name (SPN) is registered on an account other than the account the target service is using.

Here is my CURRENT problem. I'm in the process of cutting over to my new file server this weekend. I have updated all of my usrs login scripts and everything is working perfectly. I just delete the old 'A-Record' for my file server and replaced it with a CNAME record the point to my new file server to take care of users with static mappings to my old server. Anyway as a test I typed in the following:
oldservershare and get the following error message: 'Login Failure: The target account is incorrect'
- I tried to add a static wins mapping for my older server name that points to my new server. and it did work.
-I tried following the following KB article and it didn't work: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281308
